Home / AIR TESTING
PCM (Phase Contrast Microscopy) is the testing of air samples, using a specific microscope, for airborne fibers. This method can be performed with a fast turn around on the results. It is also one of the cheaper methods of testing. While PCM cannot distinguish asbestos fibers from other fibers, it can give you a total of airborne fibers present in a particular space.
When smaller fibers are present, a method called TEM (Transmission Electron Microscopy) is utilized. This technique is the most sophisticated method of air monitoring for asbestos using microscope technology. Most airborne asbestos testing utilizes this method of identification. It is so specific in its identification, that it can indicate the actual type of asbestos fiber in the air sample collected.
