Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral fiber found in rock and soil. Asbestos has been used in a number of building construction materials for insulation and as a fire retardant due to its fiber strength and heat resistance.
Asbestos has also been used in a wide range of manufactured goods, mostly in building materials such as roofing shingles, ceiling and floor tiles, paper products, and cement products.
It’s a good idea to get a sample of any material you believe might contain asbestos checked by a trained professional before you disturb it. Our fully qualified experts conduct research in a timely and confidential manner. You will see results in a matter of days.
Asbestos is a trade name for a group of six naturally occurring minerals that have been mined all over the world. The material’s heat and flame resistance, as well as its longevity, led to its use in construction materials and consumer goods. Amphibole and Serpentine are the two forms of the mineral that are divided into two groups. Only the Chrysotile form of asbestos is used in serpentine asbestos, which accounts for around 95% of all asbestos-containing building materials used in the United States.
Floor tiles and mastic, popcorn ceilings, vermiculite insulation, window glazing, pipe insulation, and cement board siding and roofing are some of the construction materials used in homes.
A certified asbestos inspector must obtain a small material sample and send it to an approved laboratory for examination before a homeowner can decide whether or not a building material contains asbestos. In Westchester County, Putnam County, and Rockland County, New York, Envirowatch works with certified asbestos laboratories.
Envirowatch inspectors regularly conduct building inspections in single-family homes and multi-family residential buildings, and they are familiar with the complexities of building types and classes, as well as the hazards associated with buildings, the risks of toxic and carcinogenic materials exposures, and activities with and around building materials that may necessitate special cleanup and disposal tasks (home renovation, restoration and demolition). Envirowatch consults with building tenants, landlords, insurance adjusters, and contractors to assess the needs and scope of each project, taking into account the project’s goals and motivations, as well as local, state, and federal regulations. Samples are collected and submitted to approved laboratories in the counties we represent for analysis.
To conduct asbestos building inspections and collect asbestos bulk samples and airborne samples, asbestos regulations generally require only approved, qualified, and properly protected asbestos building inspectors. In some states, Envirowatch asbestos practitioners are completely accredited. Additionally, prior to any renovation or remodeling work, most states and local governments require an asbestos building inspection. This is important to know if asbestos materials are present, if they may be disturbed during building operations, and if any asbestos materials need to be properly removed to prevent exposing staff and occupants to asbestos-related hazards in the air.
